BIOGRAPHY OF SAM ELLIOTT

Actor. His face to American Western viewers is as well known as John Wayne’s. During his career he has been the interpreter of numerous films for the small and large screen set in the Wild West, including George P. Cosmatos’ “Tombstone” (1993) and the TV movies “The Sacketts” (1979) and “The Shadow Riders “(1982, both based on the novels of Luis L’Amour). With a good theatrical experience behind him, in 1969 he made his film debut with a small part in George Roy Hill’s “Butch Cassidy”. Noticed by Paramount, he was offered the role of Dr. Doug Lang in the ’70 / ’71 edition of the “Mission: Impossible” series. In 1976 he obtained the first acclaim from audiences and critics thanks to Daniel Petrie’s film “Lifeguard”, while success came in the late 70s thanks to the horror film “The Testament” (1979) directed by Richard Marquand and a series of western movies for TV, most of which, like those mentioned above, are taken from the novels of Luis L’Amour. In the course of his career, however, he has been able not to get trapped in the cliché of the laconic and lonely cowboy, giving excellent proofs also in films of other genres such as in the dramas “Behind the Mask” (1985) by Peter Bogdanovich, alongside Cher, and Stephen Frears ‘”The Hi-Lo Country” (1998), in Carl Reiner’s play “Escapade with the Dead” (1990), alongside Kirstie Alley, not forgetting Frears’ thrillers “Foolproof” (2000). , Rod Lurie’s “The Contender” (2001), and various action and war films including Rowdy Herrington’s “Roadhouse Tough” (1989), Ronald F. Maxwell’s “Gettysburg” (1993) and “We Were Soldiers “(2002) by Randall Wallace. In 1991, together with Katharine Ross, he produced, wrote and starred in the TV film “Conagher” (also based on a novel by L’Amour). The two met in ’69 on the set of “Butch Cassidy” (of which Ross was the female lead), they married in 1984 and have a daughter, Cleo.
