SOLOMON BURKE BIOGRAPHY
Singer, composer and actor. He was born in 1940 in Philadelphia, but according to some sources the date of birth should be brought forward to 1936 or 1938. Ordained reverend, he began his career as a gospel singer. Attracted by music, he soon began to orient his tastes towards blues and rhythm’n’blues, eventually arriving at Atlantic Records. The public began to notice him in 1965, when Otis Redding recorded a cover of his “Down in the Valley”, while the following year he signed his first record success, “Just Out of Reach (of My Two Open Arms)” , reinterpretation of a country song. In 1964 he composed and recorded “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”, which turns out to be a success at the top of the top ten and which in 1980 John Landis will use in his “The Blues Brothers”. In 1972 he wrote the soundtrack for two films: “Diamonds are dangerous” by Barry Pollack and “Hammer” by Bruce D. Clark. In the mid-eighties he improvises himself as an actor in “Big Easy – Seductive Thrill” by Jim McBride, with Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin, an experience he repeated in 1996 in “The Little Death” by Jan Verheyen and one last time in 2005 in ” Time of Fear “by Alan Swyer. Very famous in Italy, in the nineties he arrives several times in our country as a guest of television programs conducted by Renzo Arbore and of the Porretta Soul Festival, which inaugurates the first edition with his performance. Father of 21 children, in the last years of his life he is forced to move in a wheelchair due to his obesity. He died at the age of 70 at the “Schiphol” airport in Amsterdam, following an illness that hit him while traveling on the plane from Los Angeles.
