BIOGRAPHY OF TONINO CERVI

Producer and director. Son of the great Gino Cervi, he produces important films signed by authors such as Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica, Michelangelo Antonioni, Francesco Rosi and Bernardo Bertolucci. At the age of twenty he was already the producer of two films by Mauro Bolognini and in 1968 he made his debut as a director with “Oggi a me tomorrow a te”, an Italian western written by the then newcomer Dario Argento. In 1974 it was the turn of “La ntata”, considered perhaps his best film, where he tells a good night in Milan with Giorgio Albertazzi and a very young Susanna Javicoli. In 1978 he directed “Portrait of the bourgeoisie in black”, the screenplay is by Goffredo Parise. Two films based on Molière are extremely successful, “The imaginary sick man” (1979) and “The miser” (1989), both played by an extraordinary Alberto Sordi. In 1981 it was the turn of the farce “Il turno”, based on a youthful novel by Pirandello, with Laura Antonelli, Paolo Villaggio and Vittorio Gassman, and in 1984 “Sole Naked”. He is known for having favored the debut in Italian cinema of many characters. Indeed, he likes to take risks and prefers to work with young people and novices. In the long list of his productions we find artists who would later become famous, such as Nino Manfredi, Pier Paolo Pasolini who wrote his first screenplay for Bolognini’s film, Ornella Muti, Florestano Vancini with “The long night of ’43”, which wins in Venice the prize as a first work. He manages to get Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, Mario Monicelli and Luchino Visconti to work together in a famous episodic film, “Boccaccio ’70”. His latest work as a director is the film “Il quaderno della ricerca”, an ironic ‘feminist’ comedy starring Gabriele Lavia, Claudio Bigagli, Laura Betti, Maddalena Crippa and the young Emanuela Muni. As soon as the production was finished, he would soon leave for Cannes where a copy of the film had been sent to be selected for the next festival, but Cervi died, at the age of 72, of a heart attack on Easter night 2002, during transport. by ambulance to the hospital in Siena. The director was staying at the Grand Hotel Serre in Rapolano Terme with his young partner, the actress Emanuela Muni. Cervi has four children, including the famous actress Valentina.
