Tony John winner Benjamin Hickey on seeking gay love, the Israeli way, in ‘Sublet’

June 11, 2021

It’s about time we saw John Benjamin Hickey in another movie. ‘Subletting’ opens June 11.

The chic, bookish actor has spent most of his career on stage, performing in famous Broadway shows including “Cabaret”, “The Crucible”, “Love! Worth! Compassion!” and “The Normal Heart”, the latter for which he won a Tony Award. At the moment, he is also looking for another Tony to turn in the play “The Inheritance”.

Today, the openly gay Hickey walks past the cameras in the romantic drama “Sublet”, directed by Etyan Fox. The film features Hickey as Michael, a gay travel writer grieving after the miscarriage of his surrogate mother. In Tel Aviv, he rents an apartment from Tomer (Niv Nissim), a handsome gay Israeli disdainful of Michael’s life and problems. An unlikely spark develops between the two as Michael and Tomer begin to explore each other’s pain and realize that they share a special bond.

We had some time with Hickey just before the opening of ‘Sublet’. The film hits theaters on June 11.
