You can always count on Don Trump Jr. to try and make a joke about a horrible situation. As the United States prepares to completely withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and end its airlift of refugees out of Kabul airport, thousands of people are still trying to flee the country.
The Biden administration has made it clear that it wants to stick to its original timetable for withdrawing troops by August 31, despite criticism from some of them for abandoning the country and its citizens.
The Taliban, who have now taken control of Kabul, said yesterday that the United States must stick to that goal and that if troops stay longer it would be in “violation” of previous agreements.
Donald Trump Jr. has repeatedly criticized Biden’s handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan (although his father initially promised to withdraw all troops before the end of 2020), particularly following desperate scenes from the Kabul airport.
In his latest tweet, Jr. again pushed the message that Biden and senior military personnel are more concerned about being “awake.”

Even those who perhaps seem to be on the right of the political spectrum thought Jr’s tweet was a bit too much.

While Trump Jr. probably thinks his comments on the situation are hilarious, they shed light on a complex humanitarian crisis. The situation facing many in Afghanistan with the Taliban in power is grim. This is especially the case for women and girls, and even more so for anyone suspected of being LGBTQ.
Under Sharia law, homosexuals can be stoned to death or thrown from a high building. Two gay Afghans spoke to i News this week about the predicament faced by the people of the country: “If the Taliban finds out that someone is gay, trust me, they will shoot him on the spot,” he said. one of them, named Aziz.
Although some countries have asked Biden to rethink his August 31 deadline, the president said yesterday he wanted to stick to it, but he asked the Pentagon and the State Department for “contingency plans for adjust the schedule if it becomes necessary “.
