BIOGRAPHY OF VALERIA GOLINO
Actress. She is the daughter of an Italian father and a young Greek painter. The brother is a musician and the uncle, Enzo Golino, is a famous journalist. The grandfather owned the ‘Bella Napoli’ hotel where the whole family lived. When her parents separate, Golino spent her adolescence between Naples and Athens. In Greece she started working as a model and at the age of 16 she moved to her uncle’s house in Rome. During a party he meets the director Lina Wertmuller who notes her and writes her for the film “Scherzo del Fate lurking around the corner like a street brigand” (1983) in the role of Ugo Tognazzi’s daughter. Although she has never dreamed of becoming an actress (her dream in fact was to become a cardiologist), she decides to continue this profession and at the age of 19 she already has her first leading role in Peter’s “Piccoli Fuochi” (1985). Del Monte, a director to whom she remained romantically linked for several years. The following year she won the Volpi Cup as best actress with “Storia d’amore” by Citto Maselli, an award that made her known internationally. At the age of twenty-two, the actress moved to Hollywood to follow her boyfriend, Peter Wee Herman, an actor from Puerto Rico, who had her cast in his new film, Randal Kleiser’s “La mia vita picchiatella” (1988). one scene the two kiss for about three minutes. Almost simultaneously she is chosen as the partner of Tom Cruise and Dustin Offman for the film “Rain Man” (1988) by Barry Levinson. It seems that she was chosen because the producers wanted an unknown actress who did not cost much and who was not very tall due to the short stature of the two protagonists. The actress at the time shared a Los Angeles apartment with Greta Scacchi. In 1991 he returned to Italy to shoot another Peter Del Monte film, “Traces of love life”, a film that was not very successful. In 1992 the actress made “Puerto Escondido” by Gabriele Salvatores in Mexico. Divided between America and Italy, she lives in Rome with her partner Fabrizio Bentivoglio with whom she starred in “Come due crocodilli” (1995) by Giacomo Campiotti. His nasal voice is not widely accepted in Italy, so it has sometimes been dubbed. A curiosity is that precisely because of her Italian inflection, Golino was rejected for the role then entrusted to Julia Roberts in the film “Pretty Woman”. Despite her melancholy character, the actress is known more for her comedic roles than for her dramatic ones, especially in America, where she is popular for Jim Abrahams’ “Hot Shots” series. Although she had the opportunity to be directed by Sean Penn, John Carpenter and to act alongside Gary Oldman and Nicolas Cage, it was however the Italian cinema that offered her a leading role in Silvio Soldini’s film, “The acrobats” (1997). Valeria Golino is fluent in Italian, Greek, English and French.
