WARREN BEATTY BIOGRAPHY
Actor and director. Brother of actress Shirley McLaine. He studied theater and became secretary of Washington’s National Theater. Later he attended drama courses in New York. Professionally made his television debut in the series “The many loves of Dobie Gillis”. In 1959 he arrives on Broadway. In 1961 Elias Kazan offers him the role of the protagonist of “Splendore nell’erba” (Splendor in the grass). It’s a hit for everyone: film, actor and actress, Nathalie Wood (the two have a brief romance after Wood’s divorce from Robert Wagner). In 1962 he refused to play the role of JF Kennedy in a film asked by the president himself to Warner, but after a while he returned to Jack Warner begging him to produce with him a gangster movie directed by Arthur Penn. After a first refusal, the producer agrees and thus “Bonnie and Clyde” (Gangster Story) is born. Beatty options the script (he had heard of it from François Truffaut) and entrusts the rewriting of it to Robert Benton and David Newman (having in the meantime founded Tatira, his own production company). The agreement with Warren is stipulated by agreeing 40% of the proceeds for the firm. For Beatty it is a success, and from that moment on he will be very sparing in appearances, dividing himself between comic and dramatic roles. In 1978 he made his directorial debut, signing with Buck Henry “Heaven can wait”, a remake of a 1941 Alexander Hall comedy. But of all his films, the bravest undertaking is “Reds”, 1981, colossal on the figure of the American writer John Reed, observer and supporter of the Soviet revolution. The film was awarded three Oscars (Best Director, Best Supporting Actress – Maureen Stapleton – and Best Cinematography – Vittorio Storaro). Among his many flames were Leslie Caron, Julie Christie, Diane Keaton and Madonna but he remained “single” for a long time. In 1991, he met Annette Bening on the set of Larry Livingstone’s “Bugsy” and married her the following year. Now the two have four children. In 1998 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Venice.
