Mischa Barton revealed the reason Marissa Cooper was killed outside the OC
On Tuesday, May 18, the actress spoke with E! Online on the tragic and surprising exit of his character in 2006.
“I was always ashamed to really talk about what was going on behind the scenes because I have always been a very private person and very aware of people’s feelings,” Barton explained. “Now that we live in an age where we talk about our experiences and women are clearly talking about what was really going on behind the scenes and how they were being treated, it’s a slightly different thing.
Barton considered going out after Rachel Bilson was added to the cast. During Season 1, the show offered equal pay to the cast members. At the same time, she was faced with “a kind of general intimidation from some of the men on set, which really made me feel”. At the same time, she was also facing the Falls of Fame and felt unprotected.
He officially began to fall apart for Barton midway through the filming of Season 2, which is when they doubled episodes. The producers gave her the option of leaving with an exit that would allow her to return if she wanted to in the future or the death of her character. Meanwhile, Barton was receiving many great movie roles but continually had to turn them down due to the show, so she chose to have Marissa killed off the show.
“My dream was to see myself offered these lead roles, so that’s what happened,” she continued. “It was just like it was the best thing for me and my health and just in terms of not really feeling protected by my cast and my team at that point.”
When Barton left the show, she felt both relief and sadness. She described it as a mixture of emotions. At the end of the day, she declared that she could not “continue to deal with the stress of this environment” in which she found herself.
“I was really sad to go because it was like my family, but there had also been things that weren’t that cool and I would lie to say that I wasn’t a little relieved that I was. was going to pull myself away. of this situation, ”she admitted.
At the same time, she knew how much the character means to people, and fans have always come to her to talk about Marissa.
Barton had no idea that his character’s death would have such a big impact. She said the studio made her feel like “the show is going to go on with or without you and that’s what it is.” So she decided to go out with a bang and wanted as much blood as possible. She wanted it to be tragic and poetic and overall she felt like “it was actually a beautiful ending”.
