YOUSSEF CHAHINE BIOGRAPHY

Director, also known as Yussuf Chahin. Son of a lawyer with little economic means, he studied at religious schools and then at Victoria College thanks to some scholarships. After attending a year at the University of Alexandria, in 1946 he moved to the United States, California, and for two years studied film and drama at the Pasadena Playhouse. In 1948 he returned to Egypt and collaborated with the documentary maker Gianni Verruccio. Fundamental for him is the meeting with the operator Alvise Orfanelli, who introduces him to the world of Egyptian cinema. In 1950 he directed his first film “Baba Amine”. In 1952 he took part in the Cannes Film Festival with “Ibn el Nil” (Son of the Nile). In the mid-1960s he resided in Libya for two years. Among the numerous films made, the one that brought him to the international limelight is “La terra” (1970) also presented in competition at Cannes. In 1978 he won the Silver Bear in Berlin with “Alexandrie pourquoi?”, Part of an autobiographical trilogy in which the various facets of Egyptian society are represented, which also includes “Memoria” (1982) and “Alexandria again and forever” (1989). In 1992 Jacques Lassalle proposed to him to stage for the Comédie Française “Caligola” by Albert Camus, which was very successful. In 1997 he won the Cinquantenaire Prize at the Cannes Film Festival with the film “Il fate”. In 2001 he presented “Silenzio? Si gira” out of competition at the 58th Venice International Film Festival.
