BIOGRAPHY OF ALEJANDRO AMENÁBAR
Director and Composer. After Pinochet’s coup d’état in 1973, his parents – his mother is Spanish and his father is Chilean – moved to Madrid where Alejandro grew up. After having attended without success the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the University of Madrid he decides to abandon his studies to devote himself to film making. Natural and precocious talent, he wrote, directed and produced his first short film, “La cabeza”, when he was only 19 years old. Since 1992 he has won numerous awards, including the first prize for video at the Elche Festival, the first prize and the extraordinary prize of the AICA and the ‘Luis Garcia Berlanga’ prize for short films. In 1996 he made “Tesis”, his first feature film. The following “Open your eyes” (1997), inspired by “The woman who lived twice” by Hitchcock, achieved enormous success in Spain and around the world, so much so that in 2001 Cameron Crowe decided to make a remake entitled “Vanilla Sky “with Penelope Cruz, also starring in the original version, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. “The Others” presented in 2001 at the 58th Venice Film Festival is his first film shot in English. In 2004 “Mare Inside” won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for best foreign film. The director has an impressive collection of soundtracks.
