BIOGRAPHY OF BENICIO DEL TORO
Actor. Known for his interpretations full of dark intensity, 1.90 meters tall, Benicio del Toro is undoubtedly a unique actor of his kind with camouflage skills such as to make him even interpret characters of different races. Son of lawyers, motherless at the age of nine, he left Puerto Rico when he was a teenager to move with his family to Pennsylvania, where he lives on a farm. While studying at the University of California in San Diego, where he is taking an economics course, del Toro enrolls in an acting class which soon captures him. He appears in a number of student productions, one of which takes him to the Dramatic Arts Festival at the Lafayette Theater in New York, where he decides to move to study acting at the Square Acting School. He won a scholarship for the Stella Adler Conservatory, where he trained under Arthur Mendoza’s supersivion, then moved to Los Angeles to study at the Actor’s Circle Theater thanks to which he obtained his first roles in television series such as “Miami Vice”. The first film role is in “Big Top Pee-wee – La mia vita picchiatella” (1988), then appears in “Agent 007 Private Vendetta” (1989) and various other productions but becomes known to the general public thanks to his interpretation of Fenster in “The Usual Suspects” (1995), with which he won the Independent Spirit Award. The following year he plays Benny Dalmau in Julian Schnabel’s “Basquiat”, which earned him his second Independent Spirit Award, and then plays Gaspare Spoglia in Abel Ferrara’s “Fratelli – The Funeral”. In 1998 he made “Fear and delirium in Las Vegas” the controversial film by Terry Gilliam that divided the critics and in 2000 he was directed by Guy Ritchie in the urban thriller “Snatch-The Tear” and appears uncredited in “Bread and Roses” by Ken Loach. Javier Rodriguez’s character in Steven Soderbergh’s “Traffic” earned him the Golden Globe, the Critics’ Award, the Bafta, the Silver Bear in Berlin as well as the Oscar 2000 for Best Supporting Actor. In 2001 he worked with Jack Nicholson in Sean Penn’s “The Promise”. His other films include William Fredkin’s “The Hunted” in 2003 and “Sin City” in 2005, an adaptation of Frank Miller’s comic, directed by Robert Rodriguez. In 2008 with the role of Che Guevara in Soderbergh’s film “Che”, he won the prize for best male interpretation at the Cannes Film Festival.
