Queen guitarist Brian May has brought up the idea of recording a new Queen album with singer Adam Lambert.

Lambert, who rose to fame in American Idol, has performed with Queen on tours since 2012. The original band members (May and drummer Roger Taylor) have previously said he would replace a singer like Freddie Mercury, who died of a HIV-related illness in 1991 had proven to be nearly impossible until Lambert’s arrival.

However, despite this, they did not record any new material together.

In an interview with NME this week, May was asked: Would you release a new Queen album with Adam?

“We’ve talked about it a lot but it hasn’t happened yet,” replied May.

“We walked into a studio halfway through the last US tour to try things out, but we didn’t feel like everything was okay. Unless it’s obvious and extraordinary, then we’re not going to do it, but it’s definitely a possibility.

“If I’m being honest, I have the underlying feeling that people want to hear Freddie’s voice on a record when it has Queen’s name on it and it’s hard for them to see it any other way. Live, it’s wonderful and people feel overwhelmed to see Adam working with us.

“Every time we’ve included Adam’s solo songs in Queen’s live set it comes out pretty well, so maybe that’s a sign that we should try harder to see where the recording goes. “

In other words, don’t rule it out.

Elsewhere in the room, May praised Lambert’s abilities. The gay band and singer first reunited in 2011 when Queen performed with American Idol finalists (including Lambert).

“Calling Adam The GFG – Gift From God,” May said upon finding Lambert. “He ticked all the boxes and a lot of boxes that we didn’t even know existed. His voice is phenomenal and one in a billion, and Freddie would agree with me on that. He has a great rapport with the audience and is very camper – which seems like a requirement for a lead singer in our group! May said laughing.

After Mercury’s death, Queen released a posthumous album (titled Made In Heaven) containing Mercury’s last recordings in 1995. Since then, they’ve only released one new album of new material: The Cosmos Rocks from 2008 featuring singer Paul Rodgers. However, it has encountered mixed reviews and poor sales compared to their work with Mercury.

Queen and Adam Lambert are planning a 35-date arena tour of Europe for 2022, including ten nights at the O2 Arena in London.
