BIOGRAPHY OF BRUCE DERN

Born in Chicago the June 4, 1936, from a family that included politicians and poets (enough to have had Eleanor Roosevelt as godmother at baptism) Bruce Dern begins acting after completing his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, towards the end of the 1950s, in the same period in which the short marriage with his first wife ends Marie Dean.
His first film role, uncredited, is in 1960, in Mud on the stars of Elia Kazan, and in the same year he also made his debut on the small screen with the series Route 66, which will be followed by other TV series such as Battle without quarter, The city in the backlight, Sea Hunt, Thriller, Detectives, Ripcord, Caravans to the West.
In 1964 comes the meeting with Alfred Hitchcock, which offers you a small part in Marnie and has him act in two episodes of the TV series Hitchcock time, and in the same year it appears in Slowly … slowly, sweet Carlotta, in the role of the young woman’s lover Bette Davis.
As he continues his television career, which increasingly specializes him in the western, and makes him establish himself as a character actor, Dern also meets Roger Corman, with which he will make four films: The savages (1966), The Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967), The Fire Serpent (1967) is The Barker Clan (1970).
The sixties, for Dern, were also those of the marriage with Diane Ladd which, in 1967, leads to the birth of Laura. In 1960 a first daughter was born, Diane Elizabeth, who tragically died at just 18 months in an accident. Since 1969, Dern has instead been married to his current wife, Andrea Beckett.
TV show after show, movie after movie, Bruce Dern begins to be identified as the villain, the unstable and evil character that he will play many times, and that will make him one of the best known faces of the New Hollywood.
In 1972 he even takes the responsibility of shooting, and behind, the myth John Wayne neither The cowboys, of Mark Rydell. Wayne himself worries about him: “America will hate you, for that,” he tells him, but Dern is in line with the times and with his character: “Yes, but in Berkeley they will love me.”
In the same year he is the absolute protagonist of Silent Running (in Italy 2002: the second odyssey), destined to become a cult science fiction movie, and appears for the first time alongside his friend Jack Nicholson in Bob Rafelson’s King of Marvin Gardens.
Then come films like Pat Garrett and Billy Kid by Peckinpah (1973) (uncredited), Inspector Martin set the trap (1974) with Walter Matthau, The Great Gatsby (1974) with Robert Redford (for which he is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor), Family Plot (1976), the latest Hitchcock movie, Black Sunday (1977) by John Frankenheimer e Coming Home (1978) starring Jane Fonda and Jon Voight, which will earn him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
In 1982 wins theSilver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival, for its interpretation in Racing to Win by Jason Miller, which marks the beginning of a new season, far from the canons of New Hollywood. It’s movie season with Joe Dante (The Neighbor’s Grass and The Hole) and with Walter Hill (Wild Bill and Still Alive – Last Man Standing), of titles such as Haunting – Attendance, Rebel Passion, Monster.
In 2011 is in the Twixt of Francis Ford Coppola, in 2012 has a small part in the Django Unchained by Quentin Tarantino, who will also want it in The Hateful Eight, while in the 2013 and the best actor of the Cannes Film Festival thanks to the starring role of Nebraska, of Alexander Payne, for which he also gets, in addition to awards around the world, the second Oscar nomination in a long and glorious career.
