BIOGRAPHY OF CATHERINE DENEUVE
Actress. Daughter of art, the father is the actor Maurice Dorléac (better known as M. Teynac) and the mother the actress Renée Deneuve. His sister Françoise, also an actress, died in a car accident in 1967. At the age of 13 she embarked on a film career influenced by her family environment, using her mother’s surname as a pseudonym, thus distinguishing herself from the sister who kept her paternal surname . Until the early 1960s she played small parts, until Roger Vadim decided to launch her in “Vice and Virtue” in 1962. The following year, with the musical film “Le parapluies de Cherbourg” by Jacques Demy she got noticed by critics and from the public, but the film that launches it internationally is “Beautiful by day” by Luis Buñuel from 1967. Beautiful and sensual but also mysterious, almost enigmatic, she is the ideal actress to play the characters created by directors of the caliber of Polanski and Truffaut or our Ferreri, Bolognini, Risi and Monicelli, (to name just a few of the big names he works with). Great professional is required by both French and international productions, reaching as far as Hollywood. In 1980 she won a César award as best actress for “The last metro ‘” by F. Truffaut. She received a second in ’92 with the film “Indochina” by Régis Wargnier, an interpretation that also earned her an Oscar nomination. In 1998 she was awarded the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival for the interpretation of Marianne in “Place Vendôme” by Nicole Garcia. After seeing “The Waves of Destiny” by Lars von Trier (1996) she was so fascinated by it that she wrote a letter to the Danish director asking him to work on his next film. Thus she gets the role of Cathy in “Dancer in the dark”, the musical with Icelandic singer Björk presented at Cannes 2000. In 2002 she is among the protagonists of “8 women and a mystery”, a choral comedy by François Ozon whose cast, all female, he won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. In 2005 she published the book “In the shadow of myself” a collection of private diaries in which, during the work of the actresses, the actress recorded the report of the day, both inside and outside the set. In 2006 he was president of the jury of the 63rd Venice International Film Festival. Two years later he won, with his interpretation in Arnaud Desplechinal’s ‘Un conte de noël’, the Special Prize of the 61st edition of the Cannes Film Festival. She married only once, in 1965 with the English photographer David Bailey from whom she divorced in 1972, but her ties with the French director Roger Vadim (with whom she had a son in 1962, Christian) and with the Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni (with whom he had a daughter in ’72, Chiara). He has never denied rumors of a flirtation with Truffaut during the filming of “The Last Métro”. He replaced Brigitte Bardot as a model for the Marianna on the occasion of the bicentenary of the French Republic. In 1994 she was appointed president of the Unesco Fiaf Fund for the safeguarding of the film heritage. He wrote a book in collaboration with Anne Andreu and Patrick Modiano entitled “It was called Françoise” in which he recounts the troubled relationship with his sister. The two sisters only worked together in one film, “Josephine” a 1967 Jacques Demy musical.
