CHARLES DURNING BIOGRAPHY
Actor. Sometimes also known as Charles Durnham. Son of an army officer, he continued his father’s career distinguishing himself during the Second World War. In June 1944, during the Normandy landings, he was seriously injured and for this he obtained a silver medal and three medals for valor. During his university courses at New York University, he supports himself by doing various jobs, such as the elevator operator, the blacksmith, the waiter and the dance instructor. He began his acting career in the late 1950s in the theater. In 1962 he began his artistic partnership with Joseph Papp and was distinguished by his Shakespearean roles. Film debut in 1965 with Ernest Pintoff’s “Harvey Middleman, Fireman”. The first major roles come soon after playing a corrupt cop in George Roy Hill’s Oscar-winning “The Sting.” In 1975 he received a Golden Globe Award nomination for the role of Moretti, a police lieutenant, in Sidney Lumet’s “Dog Day Afternoon”. However, he obtained the prestigious award fifteen years later, thanks to the mini television series “The Kennedys of Massachussets”. In 2000 he was in the cast of the Coen brothers’ film, “Brother, where are you?” and in 2001 starred in the comedy “Hollywood, Vermont” by David Mamet. He was married twice, until 1972 with Carol, with whom he had three children, and since 1973 with Mary Ann Amelio.
