BIOGRAPHY OF CLAIRE DENIS
Film director. He was born in Paris but spent his childhood and adolescence in Africa up to 13 years, due to the work needs of his father, a French government official in the African colonies. During this period he has the opportunity to get to know the African continent in depth, due to the numerous trips he made in those years with his father, who considered geography to be of fundamental importance. This experience will be the basis of his interest in the identity and legacy of French colonialism in Africa. After leaving the ‘black continent’ she lived in France and England, she began studying first Economics and then Oriental Languages, but soon turned her interest to photography and cinema, thanks also to her husband (photographer for ‘Vogue’ and ‘Harper’s Bazaar ‘in England) which teaches her to look at the world through the lens. In 1971 she was admitted to IDHEC (now FEMIS) where she studied Cinema and came into contact with exponents of the intellectual area of the French left and the Nouvelle Vague, especially Jacques Rivette and Jean-François Stévenin. After completing his studies in 1972, he began working as an assistant for important directors including Robert Enrico (“The secret”, 1974; “Frau Marlene”, 1975; “L’empreinte des géants” and “Guard the widower”, both from 1980 ), Costa Gravas (“Hanna K.”, 1983), Wim Wenders (“Paris, Texas”, 1984; “The sky above Berlin”, 1987) and Jim Jarmusch (“Down by Law”, 1986). He then made some television shorts and in 1988 directed his first feature film, “Chocolat”, which was immediately acclaimed by the critics of the Cannes Film Festival. The film is an evident autobiographical reference to the African experience – the film, set in Cameroon, deals with issues related to post-colonialism – and the director’s original and authorial style is outlined: detached from the conventional narrative structures of classic cinema, it favors visual and sound elements to dialogic ones, to the point that music often becomes the real protagonist of the film. Post-colonialism and African settings are also present themes in the two subsequent films, the documentary “Man No Run” (1989) and the drama “Al diavolo la morte” (1990, presented in competition in Venice). Continuing her activity as a socially committed author, Denis Claire accentuates the presence of characters and situations at the limits of society, which are usually not treated by the most commercial cinema, managing to reconcile a completely personal poetic lyricism with the most bloody aspects of France Contemporary. The peculiarity of her style attracts positive appreciation from critics, as evidenced by the numerous nominations for important prizes: the FIPRESCI prize for the direction of “US Go Home” (episode of the television series “Tous les garçons et les filles de leur âge … “), shared with the directors of the other eight episodes at the Turin Youth Cinema Festival in 1994, the Golden Leopard and the award of the Ecumenical Jury in Locarno for” Nénette e Boni “(1996) and the mention special of the literary jury of the “Berliner Zeitung” “Beau Travail” at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. His commitment does not end in directing and screenwriting, in fact he is a film teacher at the FEMIS in Paris, in 2005 he was part of the jury of the Venice Film Festival (where she had been in competition the previous year with “L’intruso” and where she returned, again in competition, in 2009 with “White Material”) and in 2010 she was appointed president of the jury of the “Un certain regard “of the Festival of Can nes.
