BIOGRAPHY OF GIUSEPPE BENNATI

Film director. His film career began in the mid-40s when, after leaving the Experimental Center of Cinematography (his fellow students include Paolo Panelli, Tino Buazzelli and Nino Manfredi), he devoted himself to the making of a series of self-produced short films. In 1950 he made the documentaries “Levrieri da corsa”, “Pompei” and “Acquario”. In the same year he also made his debut in the direction of feature films with “The microphone is yours”, inspired by the homonymous radio column. Two years later he directed what was arbitrarily considered the first western of Italian cinema: “Musoduro” (1953) – based on the novel “Musoduro, memoirs of a poacher” by Luigi Ugolini – favorably received by critics. After having signed the story and the screenplay of “The suitcase of dreams” (1953-54) by Luigi Comencini, he writes and directs a series of films that suffer alternating fortunes: “Non joking with women” and “Operation night” (both of 1955) did not receive the same approval as the previous effort, “La mina” (1957), vice versa, once again won the consideration of critics and a lukewarm reception was reserved for “L’amico del giaguaro” (1958). Ten years after his debut, however, he signed two works considered unusual and surprising: “Red lips” (1960) – a critical and ruthless portrait of the family, the bourgeoisie, consumerism and amoral youth – and “Congo alive” (1961) , considered by most to be his masterpiece, in which the Congolese situation following the proclamation of independence is dealt with with participation and competence on the basis of a love story between an Italian journalist and a Belgian woman. After an interlude of television directing in 1970 with the “Marcovaldo” – mini television series with Nanni Loy, Arnoldo Foà and Didi Perego, based on the stories of Italo Calvino – in 1974 he signed his latest film, the mystery “The assassin has reserved nine armchairs “. He died in Milan, where he lived with his children, at the age of 85 of a sudden illness.
