Governor Andrew Cuomo’s daughter, Michaela Cuomo, has turned demisexual.
In an Instagram Live with author Donato Tramuto, Michaela opened up about how she discovered her sexuality and how it has changed over the years.
She shared that she turned out to be bisexual to her family and close friends while in college. It wasn’t until high school that she discovered pansexuality and said to herself, “This is the flag for me.”
“And I recently learned more about demisexuality and I think that identity resonates the most with me,” Michaela continued. She also noted that people are constantly changing and evolving, and trying to label yourself can limit a person.
According to GLAAD, demisexuality and demiromantism are considered to be subsets of asexuality and aromantism.
“Demi means ‘half’ in French and was first coined to describe a person who does not feel attraction to an individual until a meaningful emotional bond is formed,” the organization explained. “It works from the idea of primary attraction and secondary attraction … Demisexuals or demiromantics do not feel a primary attraction, but feel a secondary attraction.”
“Specters are as fluid as we are and the attachment to labels only restricts us,” said Michaela. “I think of anyone who says otherwise, it comes from a place of fear and not love.”
Michaela first appeared publicly as a member of the LGBTQ + community during Pride Month in June via Instagram. She was shocked at the amount of support she received. Her goal was to help others accept themselves and show that they too can come out when they are ready. The number of people who sent her a message thanking her for the inspiration “was worth it”.
