BIOGRAPHY OF JAMIE BELL
Andrew James Matfin Bell, aka “Jamie”, was born in 1986 in Billingham, Northern England. He grows up only with his mother and sister: by accompanying the latter to a dance lesson, he lets himself be seduced by dance at an early age, enrolling in the Stagecoach Theater Arts. In this context, in 1999 he won the auditions to play the boy who dreams of dancing in Billy Elliot (2000) by Stephen Daldry: the film stocks Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, but Jamie in particular comes up with a BAFTA for Best Male Performance. He’s just 15 years old.
In 2002 is in the adaptation of the Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens, followed by other works, among which the strange is certainly noteworthy Dear Wendy (2004) by Thomas Vinterberg, written by Lars Von Trier, in which Bell plays the leader of a youth gang that worships guns.
Between 2005 and 2006 comes the time for more noble productions, even if the spotlight is not on him: he is in the choral cast of King Kong (2005) by Peter Jackson and Flags of Our Fathers (2006) of Clint Eastwood.
Billy Elliot’s sweetness gives way to bitter and angrier roles, as demonstrated by his villain Griffin in Jumper (2008) and the war drama Defiance – Days of Courage (2008), in which he is the brother of Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber. Always warlike, but set in ancient Rome, is the costume drama The Eagle of 2011.
The classics of his country are included in his filmography with the Jane Eyre by Cary Fukunaga, with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, before Steven Spielberg wanted him for the role of the famous Tin-Tin in The Adventures of Tintin – The Secret of the Unicorn (2011): It is the first time that Bell is confronted with the performance capture that he will re-embrace in Fantastic 4.
In 2012 he married his colleague Evan Rachel Wood after a long intermittent relationship, from whom he later divorced in 2014. After the parenthesis of the visionary and once again unanimous Snowpiercer (2012, by Joon-ho Bong), Jamie further toughens up his mask, aiming for two extreme feature films: Filth (2013, from the novel by Irwine Welsh), alongside James McAvoy, and above all Nymphomaniac – Volume 2 (2013) by Lars Von Trier. After a long interlude in the TV series TURN, he agrees to interpret Ben Grimm aka the Thing in new Marvel’s Fantastic Four films, starting with 2015’s Fantastic 4.
