BIOGRAPHY OF JEAN-PAUL BELMONDO
Actor. Son of Paul Belmondo, well-known sculptor of Sicilian origin. After practicing football and boxing at almost professional levels, he turned his attention to acting and attended the Academy of Dramatic Art in Paris. After a long and intense activity in the theater, especially in the classics, in the second half of the 1950s he made his debut in the cinema. Thanks to films such as “Fatti bella e taci” (1959, by Marc Allégret and Henri Verneuil, in which he appears for the first time paired with the other icon of French cinema Alain Delon), “A double mandate” (1959, by Claude Chabrol), “Until the last breath” (1960) and “The bandit of 11” (1965, both by Jean Luc Godard) becomes the typical face of the characters of the nouvelle vague. Over thirty years of uninterrupted success have made him the most popular actor in French cinema, even though “Bebel” enjoyed greater esteem outside his country of origin. Following the example of Alain Delon he founded his own production company, Cerito (from the Sicilian surname of his maternal grandmother), while in 1986 he bought the prestigious Théatre de Varietés in Paris, where he often plays on the same stage that saw Fernandel and Sacha Guitry, married in 1952 to the dancer Elodie Constantin, with whom he had three children: Patricia (who died in a fire in 1993), Florence and Paul (who followed in his father’s footsteps and is also an actor). In 1967 he divorced his wife and from this moment his love life was very eventful: first a long period of cohabitation with Ursula Andress, then Laura Antonelli, left for the Brazilian singer Sotomayor, until in 1990 he met the current wife Nathalie Tardivel of thirty years younger, married in December 2002. In 2001 while he was in Corsica he suffered a stroke that paralyzed the right side of his face. Admitted to a Paris hospital, he was discharged after six days of intensive care.
