Internet personality JoJo Siwa has announced that she will join the cast of Dance with the Stars next season in a historic role: she will be the first female competitor in the series’ history to dance as a couple. sex.
Variety reports that Siwa will have a female partner throughout her appearance on the show, marking the first same-sex couple in the history of the show’s 30 seasons.

“It’s really special that not only now can I share with the world that you get to love who you want to love, but also that you have a dance who you want to dance with,” Siwa said in a statement. “There are a lot of hurdles we’re going to have to jump over – who’s in charge, how do you dress, what shoes are you wearing? But I think it’s something I’m looking forward to. It’s going to be tricky, but it’s going to give people so much – people from the LGBTQ community, people who feel a little different. It will give them a feeling of happiness.
Siwa added that the show’s producers offered her the option of choosing a male or female partner. Given the option, she chose the lady.
“I want everything to go well for the people who come after me,” she added. “I want everything to be OK for the people who come after me.”
Siwa and Olympic gymnast Suni Lee are, so far, the only actors announced for the new season. Parent network ABC will release the full lineup on September 8. The show will air on September 20.
