Kevin Costner, born Kevin Michael Costner, is born the January 18, 1955 in Lynwood, California, but grew up primarily in Compton. When his father was promoted from a simple electrician to manager of the Souther California Edison branch, young Kevin was forced to move often with his family and consequently to change schools frequently, which did not help his temperament, which was already not very inclined to the academic world. During his adolescence he much preferred sport, but he did not disdain music and poetry, in fact he played the piano, sang in the church choir and wrote poems. However, the passion for cinema came in childhood, after the vision of The conquest of the West (1962), although in the beginning it remains very latent. After graduating, in 1978 he graduated in marketing and finance from California State University, Fullerton, but already in the last year of college he began taking his first acting lessons.

To finally convince him to focus on the road of cinema was a fortuitous encounter with Richard Burton on the plane during Costner’s honeymoon. Firmly convinced of which career to pursue, while doing other jobs to support himself, Costner resumed his evening acting classes and that was how he made his film debut with Malibu Hot Summer (1981), an independent film in which he stars, which was only released in 1986, after Costner began to build a certain fame. For this reason, it is considered incorrectly Love and death at the game table (1983) his debut.

Later, it appears briefly in Night Shift – All at night (1982) by Ron Howard is Table for five (1983) by Robert Lieberman, but it is in 1985 that the first leading roles arrive with the dramatic comedy Fandango of Kevin Reynolds, the western Silverado of Lawrence Kasdan and the sportsman The winner of John Badham. To consecrate him, however, it was Brian De Palma with The Untouchables – The Untouchables (1987), where he shares the set with the likes of Sean Connery, Andy García is Robert De Niro. The success is confirmed in the same year also by the main role in With no way out (1987), thriller directed by Roger Donaldson. Later he is involved in two films in which he can give free rein to his passion for baseball, that is Bull Durham – A three-handed game (1988) with Susan Sarandon is The man of dreams (1989).

With a name now established in the acting field, he decides to go elsewhere and first founded the production company Tig Productions, then made his debut as a director with Dance with wolves (1990), which won twelve Oscar nominations – including Best Actor to Costner himself – winning seven, including Best Picture and Best Director. This is followed by another success with Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves (1991), directed once again by Reynolds, which earned him several nominations, including that of Most Attractive Actor at the ’92 MTV Movie Awards, also consecrating him as a sex symbol. Also in 1991 he is the protagonist of the bio-pic of Oliver Stone, JFK – A case still open, in which he plays attorney Jim Garrison, receiving a Golden Globe nomination; the Kennedy case will also interest him in 2000, when he will take on the role of the President’s advisor in Thirteen Days.

He’s back in contention as MTV’s Most Wanted Man, following Frank Farmer’s performance with Whitney Houston in Bodyguard (1992). Keep riding the celebrity wave with a great result with films A perfect world (1993) by Clint Eastwood is Waterworld – Underwater world (1995), third collaboration with Kevin Reynolds, which, despite having always been called a flop by the director himself, achieved worldwide success. Costner, however, takes a step with his second direction, The man of the day after (1997), crushed by critics and bankruptcy at the box office. In this period he also collects several nominations for the Razzie Awards as Worst Actor, a stalemate that does not seem to improve with the start of the New Millennium. The sign of the dragonfly – Dragonfly (2002) does not get the desired results, while things improve on the directing front with the western Borderland – Open Range (2003).

It will be necessary to wait until 2005 for his acting career to recover definitively, thanks to Family vices (2005) with Jennifer Aniston is Love quarrels, for which the San Francisco Film Critics Circle awarded him a Best Supporting Actor award. Criticism disagrees with comedy-drama Swing Vote – A man with 300 million votes (2008) of Joshua Michael Stern, but it seems that he has definitely recovered from the negativity of previous years; when acting with Ben Affleck in The Company Men (2010). Cinecomic con The man of Steel (2012), where he plays a supporting role as Jonathan Kent, Clark’s father.

He also proves himself on the small screen with the miniseries Hatfields and McCoys (2012), based on the feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys in the second half of the nineteenth century, obtaining a high audience rate. Costner is William Anderson Hatfield, patriarch of the family, with whom he wins an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor Guild Award. In the meantime, he continues to carry on his film commitments, back to telling baseball in McFarland, USA (2015) and is measured by the action in Criminal (2016). In 2017 he takes part in the Oscar nominee The right to count and to the bio-pic Molly’s Game, where he plays the wise father of Jessica Chastain.
