PETER BOYLE BIOGRAPHY
Actor. The son of a famous comedian who, in the 1950s, hosted a popular children’s TV show called ‘Lunch with Uncle Pete’, he was a monk of a Christian order before pursuing an artistic career. After leaving the habit he moved from Philadelphia to New York where he studied acting with Uta Hagen. He began acting in off-Braodway theaters by participating in the tour of ‘The strange couple’. He later worked extensively with the ‘Chicago’s Second City’ theater company. The first appearances on the big screen are in films such as ‘The Virgin President’ (1968) and ‘Medium Cool’ (1969). The film with which he gets a certain notoriety is ‘Joe’ (1970). Impressed by the reception he received for this film, he later turned down the part of the protagonist in ‘French Connection’ and all other roles characterized by an excessive rate of violence. In 1974 Mel Brooks wants him with him to play the part of the monster in ‘Frankenstein Junior’. On the set he meets a ‘Rolling Stones’ journalist, Lorraine Alterman, falls in love with her and, three years later, marries her. Meanwhile, thanks to Lorraine’s friendship with Yoko Ono, Peter meets the ex Beatle John Lennon and becomes, in short, one of his best friends. In 1977, when Peter and Lorraine get married, Lennon is one of the witnesses. Over the years Boyle has often played important roles even if never as a protagonist: he plays in ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976), ‘Outland’ (1981) and ‘Hammett’ (1982). An active television actor, Boyle received good reviews playing Senator Joseph McCarthy in the series ‘Tail Gunner Joe’ (1977) as well as his miniseries ‘Joe Bash’ (1986). As a comedian he had his best chance playing a mentally ill escaped asylum in ‘The Dream Team’ (1989). The following year he suffered a stroke that left him voiceless for six months. Subsequently he is the victim of a heart attack (1999). He died in his New York home on December 12, 2006.
