BIOGRAPHY OF ROBERT F. BOYLE

Set designer. Born in Los Angeles, he spent his childhood on a ranch in the San Joaquin Valley. Graduated in Architecture from the University of Southern California, due to the Great Depression, he can’t find a job and has to settle for a job as an extra at the RKO. In 1933 he joined Paramount as a draftsman, under the direction of production designer Hans Dreier. In 1936 he was on his first film set in “The conquest of the West” by Cecil B. DeMille, but the outbreak of the Second World War interrupted his career, as he left for the front as a photographer. In the early 1940s he joined Universal as an art director. In 1942 he has one of the most important meetings of his career: he gets to collaborate on the scenography of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Saboteurs”, starting an artistic-creative partnership that over the years continues with “The Shadow of Doubt” (1943), “Intrigue” (1959), “The birds” (1963) and “Marnie” (1964). For the thrill master he finds himself having to rebuild Mount Rushmore in his studio, thus becoming one of the most famous set designers of the time. It is to him that in 1966 the director Norman Jewison turns to recreate the submarine of “The Russians arrive, the Russians arrive”. During his career he received four Oscar nominations but never received the statuette: the first in 1959 for “Intrigue”, the others in 1970 for “Gaily, Gaily”, in 1972 for “The violinist on the roof” and the last in 1977 for “Il pistolero”. In 1997 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Art Directors Guild, while on February 24, 2008 the Academy awarded him the Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. Although ill and confined to a wheelchair, he insists on attending the awards evening and receiving the statuette from Nicole Kidman’s hands. He dies at 100 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
