BIOGRAPHY OF RICHARD BURTON
Actor. A great Welsh actor, Richard Burton is remembered not only for his colorful and much talked about marriage with Liz Taylor, but also for his behavior as an inveterate drinker and tireless womanizer. Penultimate of 13 children, his mining father sent him to study at Oxford. At 20 he was named Burton after his acting teacher. He made his debut in 1943 in Liverpool. After the war he returned to the stage and in 1948 he made his debut on the screen. Beautiful and very charming, he was noticed in Brodway and in 1950 Fox made him sign a gold contract. From here begins his cinematic ascent. Thanks to his athletic body, he plays the role of Marcello, a young Roman officer, in “La tunica” (1953) by Hanry Koster; he is Alexander the Great in Robert Rossen’s 1956 film of the same name; he is Antonio in the blockbuster “Cleopatra” (1962) by Mankiewicz, who made history both for the astronomical costs and for the love story with Elisabeth Taylor who dragged him onto the covers of the pink weeklies. Together with his wife, he plays Anthony Asquith’s “International Hotel” (1963); “The Taming of the Shrew” (1967) by Franco Zeffirelli; “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966) by Mike Nichols, where the two bring to the screen the couple conflict that characterized their marriage. In addition to Taylor, whom he has married twice, Richard Burton has had other wives. In 1955 he married the theater actress Sybil Williams from whom he divorced to marry Taylor in 1964; The third wife, from 1976 to 1980, is Sarah Hunt, ex-wife of F1 driver James Hunt; his last wife, in his early twenties, is Sally Hay, production assistant known on the set of the TV movie “Wagner”. Other important films are: “The Rains of Ranchipur” (1955) by Jean Negulesco; Zanuck’s “Longest Day” (1962); Nicholas Ray’s “Bitter Victory” (1957); Tony Richardson’s “Angry Young People” (1959). He works with important directors such as John Huston in “The Night of the Iguana” (1964) and Joseph Losey in “The Cliff of Desires” (1968). He is the protagonist and proves his great skill in “Beckett and his King” (1964) by Peter Glenville; “Doctor Faustus” (1967) which he co-directs with Nevil Coghill; Charles Jarrott’s “Anna of a Thousand Days” (1969); Martin Riff’s “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” (1965), which earned him one of seven Oscar nominations; Joseph Losey’s “The Assassination of Trotsky” (1972), which is his last significant film; “Equus” (1977) by Sidney Lumet. In 1974 he was alongside Sofia Loren in the romantic film “Il Viaggio” by Vittorio De Sica. Commercial films such as John Boorman’s “The Exorcist II: The Heretic” (1977) followed; Jack Gold’s “Touch of the Medusa” (1977); the war film “Four of the Wild Goose” (1978) by Andrew V. McLaglen. Among his latest performances, in 1984, Tony Palmer’s “Wagner” and Michael Radford’s “1984” (1984). He died in Geneva on August 5, 1984, at the age of only 59, of a cerebral haemorrhage, at the end of the filming of “1984”.
