BIOGRAPHY OF ROBERTO FAENZA

Director, writer and university professor (Federal City College of Washington, DC and “La Sapienza” University of Rome). In 1965 he graduated in Directing at the Experimental Center of Cinematography in Rome. In 1970 he graduated in Political Science at the University of Pisa. He made his directorial debut with “Escalation” (1968), the following year he directed “H2S”. After a nine-year hiatus, in 1978 he shot the docu-drama “Forza Italia!” whose political content forces him to another long hiatus. In 1979 he directed “Si salvi chi chi”, with Claudia Cardinale and Gastone Moschin. After “CopKiller” (1982) and “Mio caro dottor Grasler” (1989), in 1993 he directed “Jona che visse nella balena” for which he obtained the Davide di Donatello for best direction while the same award went to Ennio Moricone for the music and Elisabetta Beraldo for the costumes. Two years later it was the turn of “Sosenga Pereira” in which Mastroianni’s David 1995 deserves the award, while the Silver Ribbon 1996 goes to Giantito Burchiellato’s scenography. In 1997 his “Marianna Ucrìa” won prizes : both the Davide and the Nastro d’Argento for the photography by Tonino Delli Colli and for the sets and costumes by Danilo Donati. Capable of a cinema that travels, discovers and documents, in 1999 he directed “The Lost Lover” set in Tel Aviv and in 2003 “Take me to the soul”, the result of twenty years of research on the life of Sabina Spilrein, the first hysterical patient treated and healed with psychoanalysis, then nascent. In 2004 his “In the light of the sun” on the last two years of the life of Don Pino Pugliesi, a priest killed by the Mafia, is an unusual work of civil commitment for the cinema of recent years. In 2007, struck by the modernity of Federico De Roberto’s “I Viceré”, he transposed it for the screen considering it “a merciless autobiography of a nation”.
