BIOGRAPHY OF TIM BURTON
Film director. His father Bill works at the Burbank Parks and Recreation Department and his mother Jean at ‘Cats plus’, a small gift shop. Since he was a child he has been passionate about cartoons and old horror films – especially those starring Vincent Price – and enjoys shooting short films with his Super8. Thanks to a scholarship he attended the animation course at the California Institute of Art and later was hired as an animator at Disney. He participates in various projects including the creation of the characters of “Red and Toby Enemies” (1981), but his ideas are not in line with Disney guidelines. Despite this, he was given the opportunity to work on his own projects, so he made two animated shorts: “Vincent” (1982, homage to his idol Vincent Price) and “Frankenweenie” (1984, inspired by the famous character created by Mary Shelley, where but the protagonist is a dog). Among other things, he directs two medium-length films for TV: “Hansel and Gretel” (1982) and “Aladdin and his wonderful lamp” (1984) and invents some of the characters in “Taron and the magic pot” (1985). In 1985, actor Paul Rubens chooses him to direct “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” – the film starring his cinematic alter ego Pee-Wee Herman – and is also given the opportunity to shoot the episode “The Jar “for the TV series” Alfred Hitchcock Presents “. With the second feature film, “Beetlejuice – pig sprite” (1988) he manages to conquer audiences and critics and the film is awarded the Oscar for best make-up, but it is only the prelude to the great success it has achieved with the film adaptation of the famous character. of the comics “Batman” (1989, winner of the Oscar for the best scenographies) and above all with the surreal fable “Edward Scissorhands” (1990). Later he devoted himself to more elaborate projects such as the dark fable “Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993, written and produced by him, but directed by Henry Selick) or the biographical “Ed Wood” (1995) inspired by the life of the well-known director of B- movies. The film was critically acclaimed, won the Oscar for best makeup and best supporting actor (Martin Landau) but did not achieve as much success with the public. Better luck at the box office have the next “Mars Attack!” (1996, inspired by the characters of the famous Topps stickers of the ’60s), “The Mystery of Sleepy Hollow” (1999, Oscar for best production design) and above all the remake of “The Planet of the Apes” (2001). During the shooting of this film a love story was born with the English actress Helena Bonham Carter, his current partner, who has since been present in all his films, which has already made him the father of Billy Ray, born in London on 6 October 2003 , and expects a second child in December 2007. Previously, after divorcing his wife Lena Gieseke in 1991 (married in February 1989), he was linked to actress Lisa Marie who, as well as his life partner for over a decade (they broke up in 2001), she was also the inspiring muse of the works produced in those years. In 2003 with “Big Fish” packs another small masterpiece that deserves an Oscar for the soundtrack and is in the running for the most prestigious awards. The same happens for “The Chocolate Factory”, from the homonymous book by Roald Dahl, for whose costumes in 2005 Gabriella Pescucci won the Silver Ribbon. In the same year he directed with Mike Johnson “The corpse bride” which in Venice obtained the Future Film Festival Digital Award. In 2007 at the 64th Venice International Film Festival he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
