BIOGRAPHY OF TOMMY FLANAGAN
Born in Glasgow on 3 July 1965, Scot Tommy Flanagan spent his childhood and youth in his home country. The first years of life must not have been easy for the actor, abandoned by his father, who left the family when little Tommy was only six years old. The acting career was never among the first choices of Flanagan, who had never even considered it among the various work alternatives; although he had several jobs, his main activity was as a DJ. Right at the end of an evening where he had played, Flanagan suffers an attack with a knife outside a club, which leaves his face disfigured by some scars on his cheeks, reminiscent of a Glasgow smile.
When the friend Robert Carlyle went to see him in the hospital, proposed to him to try a career in acting and to join the Carlyle’s Raindog Theater Company, with which Flanagan made his debut in the theater and where he served for three years. In the early nineties he began to take part in the first television productions, including series Screen One (1992) and Taggart (1993), but 1995 is the year that marks the turning point in the Glasgow actor’s career with the entry into the cast of the epic Braveheart as Morrison, a Scottish warrior who participates in the revolt carried out by William Wallace aka Mel Gibson.
From this moment he begins to fill small roles, which allow him to work with very successful actors and directors. Back on TV in 2001 for the miniseries Attila, the autumn in which he plays the role of Bleda, brother of the “scourge of God”, here with the face of Gerard Butler. He is the security officer on the icebreaker bound for Antarctica in Alien vs. Predator (2004) of Paul WS Anderson and appears in the thriller Sin City (2005) and Smokin ‘Aces (2006), which will follow Smokin ‘Aces 2: Assassins’Ball.
A role of great importance, Flanagan covers him in Call from a stranger (2006), where he is the unknown serial killer on the phone and is not the only interpretation of a negative character that we find in recent years, since even in Hero Wanted (2008) it is the actor himself who leads a gang of criminals. In 2008 he joined the cast together with Charlie Hunnam of the TV series Sons of Anarchy, centered around a biker gang, and will retain the role of Flip “Chibs” Telford for all seven seasons. In 2017 he is at the cinema with the first cinecomic of his career, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which is the alien – here in human form compared to the comic – Tullk Ul-Zyn, member of the Ravagers.
