BIOGRAPHY OF FLORINDA BOLKAN

Actress and producer. Daughter of a deputy and writer, who remained a widower decides to remarry the eighteen year old Maria Hosana who gives him three children. His father died shortly after his birth and the family moved to Rio de Janeiro following his mother’s second marriage. These are very tough years, but Florinda still manages to get a diploma in languages. She is fluent in English and French and after a few years she was hired as a hostess by Varig Airlines. She gets engaged to a Polish noble, but has no intention of getting married, and in 1963 she moves to Europe, goes to live in Paris and attends some courses at the Sorbonne. After two years she decides to return to Brazil, but in 1967 she goes to Italy and meets the producer Marina Cicogna who introduces her to Luchino Visconti: the great director will propose her the role that will make her emerge, that of the actress kept by Helmut Berger in the film “The Fall of the Gods” (1969). It is not her first experience, since in the years preceding their meeting Florinda was directed by Giuliano Montaldo and Damiano Damiani, but it is thanks to Visconti that she is cast for her first leading role in “Metti una sera a cena” (1969 ) by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, thanks to which he received the gold plaque at the 14th edition of the David di Donatello. In the same year she played Augusta Terzi in Elio Petri’s film “Investigation of a citizen above all suspicion” alongside Gian Maria Volonté and a few years later she received the David di Donatello as best actress (ex aequo with Monica Vitti) for “Anonimo veneziano” by Enrico Maria Salerno (1970). Her sensual charm and her particular beauty – tall, slender, angular face – her image of a ‘modern’, independent, strong-willed woman make her suitable for leading roles, which remain etched in the viewer’s mind like the turbid Carol Hammond in “A lizard with a woman’s skin” (1971) or that of the poor ‘maciara’ in “Non si sevizia un duck” (1972) both by Lucio Fulci. 1973 is the year of “Dear Parents” by Enrico Maria Salerno, a film for which she won her second David di Donatello as a leading actress. Towards the end of the seventies her career receives a setback, as she decides to retire to private life away from the spotlight, we still find her in secondary roles (“Acqua e soap”, 1983, by Carlo Verdone or “Legati da tenera friendship “, 1983, by Enrico Maria Salerno). In 1984 he participated in the TV series “The octopus” and began his theatrical career directed by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi (“Metti una sera a cena”, “Zio Vanja”). At the beginning of the nineties he published his cookery book “You invite a table” (Mondadori) and took part in some series for television. In 2000 he opened his production company, “Florinda Bolkan Produçoes” and ventured into directing with “Eu nao conhecia Tururù” (I did not know Tururù), shot entirely in the north-east of Brazil, his homeland.
