BIOGRAPHY OF HENRYK GÓRECKI

Composer. His mother Otylia, a music lover and amateur pianist, died when he was only two years old, but managed to pass on his passion for music. Opposed by his father and his new wife, who forbid him to play the piano, only in 1943 did he get to be able to take violin lessons. Determined to become a teacher, in 1952 he enrolled at the State Music School “Szafrankowie Brothers” in Rybnik where he studied clarinet, violin, piano and music theory. After graduating from the Katowice Academy of Music, he moved to Paris in the early 1960s to complete his studies. Later, he returns to Poland where he alternates his activity as a teacher with that of a composer, always attentive to the traditions of his country and open to suggestions from Czech and German folklore. In 1976 he composed the “Symphony n ° 3 for soprano and orchestra, opus 36”, which gave him fame at home and abroad. He arrives at the cinema between the nineties and the 2000s, composing the music for some short films and TV films such as “Wit” (2001) by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson or the Canadian documentary “Gambling, Gods and LSD” ( 2002) by Peter Mettler. Many of his musical pieces are successful on the big screen and are repeatedly used as the soundtrack of important films such as “Police” (1985) by Maurice Pialat with Gérard Depardieu, “Basquiat” (1996) by Julian Schnabel starring a splendid Jeffrey Wright , “Ripley’s game” (2002) by Liliana Cavani with John Malkovich, “Come Dio comanda” (2008) by Gabriele Salvatores with Filippo Timi and Elio Germano and finally “Altiplano” (2009) by Peter Brosens and Jessica Hope Woodworth. He died after a long illness at the age of 76, from the consequences of an infection.
