BIOGRAPHY OF ROCCO PAPALEO
Rocco Papaleo, also known in the registry office by the second name Antonio, is born the August 16, 1958 in Lauria, Basilicata, but he moved to Rome at a very young age to study mathematics at the university. His passion for acting also dates back to this period, he performs as a stand-up comedian, staging a caricature of the little southerner. Determined to change his path, he began studying acting, taking his first steps in the world of entertainment, thanks also to important meetings, such as the one with Rodolfo Laganà. His first acting rehearsal took place in 1985 in the theater with Quick whispers of Salvatore Di Mattia, while he enters the world of entertainment only a few years later, in prime time as a rookie comedian with variety Ewviva (1988) on Canale 5.
From 1989 to 1991 he was in the cast of Iron class, TV series about some young men in military service broadcast on Italia 1, but in the meantime it also begins to appear on the big screen, the first time is with Mario Monicelli neither The dark evil (1990) in a small role to be followed by other appearances. The major interpretation of these years – in addition to the television one in Those of the special (1992) – Papaleo owes it to Leonardo Pieraccioni and on his debut with The graduates (1995), where is one of the four protagonists. It is Pieraccioni himself who senses that the Lucan who has now transplanted to the capital has potential suitable for comedy, but he is not the only one who notices it; after him, in fact, they move to have him in the cast too Paolo Virzì with August holidayso (1995), Umberto Marino with Finally alone (1997), Giulio Base with The bomb (1999) and Giovanni Veronesi, which in the course of the 90s will direct him twice in The barber of Rio (1996) and Viola kisses everyone (1998).
With his humor and Southern accent, Papaleo will specialize almost exclusively in comedy during the first decade of the 2000s. Back to being directed five times by the director who most of all put him in the spotlight, Pieraccioni, who wants him next to him in Heaven suddenly (2003), I love you in all languages of the world (2005), A beautiful wife (2007), Me & Marilyn (2009) and Happiness at last (2011). Now an icon of comedy, two kings of laughter also aim at him Vincenzo Salemme with Heaven wanted! (2002) and Carlo Vanzina with Sunday lunch (2003) – with which he received his first nomination for the Nastri d’Argento as Best Supporting Actor; but the TV, which had launched it, in recent years wants it back with it and here Papaleo in a single year, in 2000, takes part in the film Fly Sciuscù and to the series Padre Pio – Between heaven and earth is Journalists.
The actor, who now fully dominates the Italian comic scene, after having collaborated several times in the scripts of the films he played, decides to direct himself and try to direct. The first experiment is Basilicata coast to coast (2010), an adventurous comedy in the lands of his homeland together with Alessandro Gassmann, Paolo Briguglia, Max Gazzè is Giovanna Mezzogiorno with a soundtrack in which the director, who is passionate about music, can only participate. Received positive opinions and excellent box office earnings, the film allows Papaleo to win a Nastro d’Argento and a David di Donatello as a debut director in 2011. These awards will be followed over the years by a TV Award as a revelation character and a Vincenzo Padula National Award for the South in cinema; needless to say how familiar Papaleo has become to the Italian public.
In 2013 he tries again with a predominantly female cast, consisting of Barbara Bobul’ova, Sarah Felberbaum is Claudia Potenza, and with music always acting as a glue between the scenes of A small southern company. Only a few years later he is in his third direction with Wave upon Wave (2016), but he does not deny himself to the directions of others, contaminating Italian cinema with the hilarity that distinguishes it together with Luca Miniero with A boss in the living room (2014) and The most beautiful school in the world (2014) and many other filmmakers, who rely on him to ensure a laugh for the audience in the room. In particular, in recent years he has amused himself with the character of the absurd uncle Franco in What do you want it to be (2016) of Edoardo Leo, brought panache with the mechanic Odoacer in the drama The Place (2017) of Paolo Genovese and is the protagonist along with Laura Morante of Bob & Marys, a couple who rediscovers their rebellious air thanks to a criminal deception.
