BIOGRAPHY OF ROSSELLA FALK
Actress. She was one of the great ladies of the theater, remembered as “the Italian Greta Garbo”. Graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Art directed by Silvio D’Amico, she began working in the theater in the late 1940s and soon became one of the most acclaimed young actresses of the post-war period. After her debut at the Fenice in Venice, as a stepdaughter in Pirandello’s “Six characters in search of an author” (1948), she is called by Luchino Visconti to act in the company of Paolo Stoppa and Rina Morelli at the Eliseo theater in Rome, where she participates in shows memorable as “A tram that is called desire” by Tennessee Williams, “The Seducer” by Diego Fabbri, “The Innkeeper” by Carlo Goldoni, “The three sisters” by Chekhov. However, the collaboration with the famous director does not turn out to be completely peaceful, so much so that the actress leaves the company to go to the Piccolo Teatro in Milan where Giorgio Strehler stages “The Masquerade” by Alberto Moravia (1954), in which she plays also the young Romolo Valli. The understanding between the two actors is so strong that, in the same year, it will lead to the foundation – together with Giorgio De Lullo, Anna Maria Guarnieri and Tino Buazzelli – of the famous “Compagnia dei Giovani”, financed by Remigio Paone and to which they are added in followed by Elsa Albani and Ferruccio De Ceresa: a unique artistic partnership in the Italian theater, active until the seventies. Their interpretations remain memorable, characterized by the precision, imagination, elegance and refinement of the preparations, directed by De Lullo, of works by authors such as Luigi Pirandello (including “Six characters in search of an author”, “Il Gioco delle Parti”, “The friend of the wives”) and Giuseppe Patroni Griffi (who wrote for them “D’amore si muore” and “Metti una sera a cena”) as well as particularly modern texts for the time such as “Gigi” by Colette, “La calunnia” by Lillian Hellman or “The liar” by Diego Fabbri. After the dissolution of the Compagnia dei Giovani, Rossella Falk continues her exceptional career even alone or with companions such as Valentina Cortese (“Maria Stuarda” by Schiller), Umberto Orsini (“The two-headed eagle” by Cocteau, directed by Gabriele Lavia), Monica Vitti (in the female version of “The strange couple” by Neil Simon). Among his latest efforts: from 2004 to 2006 the international tour of the show “Vissi d’Arte, Vissi d’amore”, a recital focused on personal memories, interviews and writings on Maria Callas; Ingmar Bergman’s “Autumn Symphony” (2008); “East West” (2009) by Cristina Comencini. From 1981 to 1997 she was also artistic director of the Eliseo Theater in Rome together with Giuseppe Battista and Umberto Orsini. Beautiful, attractive, slender and very elegant, Rossella Falk has given her interpretations a touch of sophisticated personality and dramatic truth. A true diva of the theater, she has always favored the theatrical career over the cinematographic one, of which we remember: the character-conscience in “8 ½” (1963) by Federico Fellini; the interpretation of Erminia, wife of Alberto Sordi in the episode “The family” of the film “Made in Italy” (1965, directed by Nanny Loy); the appearance in “Modesty Blaise. The Beautiful Who Kills” (1966) by Joseph Losey; foray into Hollywood with Robert Aldrich’s “When a Star Dies” (1968); some horror films, including “The black belly tarantula” (1971) by Paolo Cavara, “Seven orchids stained red” (1972) by Umberto Lenzi and his latest appearance on the big screen, “Nonhosonno” by Dario Argento (2001 ). Much more incisive were his forays on the radio and on the small screen, especially with the dramas “End of the year on the scales” (1964, directed by Daniele D’Anza), with Rossano Brazzi, and “The sign of command” ( 1971, by Flaminio Bollini and Dante Guardamagna, directed by Daniele D’Anza), alongside Ugo Pagliai and Carla Gravina, or in the television transpositions of comedies such as “Giovanna di Lorena” (1959, directed by Mario Ferreri), “Affari di stato “(1961, directed by Guglielmo Morandi); “That gentleman who came to lunch” (1961, directed by Alessandro Brissoni), “Le donne di buon humore” (1961, directed by De Lullo), “The Grand Duchess and the Waiter” (1963) and “Tovarich” (1966) – both directed by Flaminio Bollini -, “Epitaph for George Dillon” (1971, made by Fulvio Tolusso), “Nostra Dea” (1972, directed by Silverio Blasi), “The closed door (1986, directed by Edmo Fenoglio). Passionate about travel, she was fluent in four languages and over the years made friends of the caliber of Maria Callas, Jean Cocteau and Dirk Bogarde.She died in Rome, at the San Giovanni hospital, at the age of 86.
