Rep. Val Demings of Florida was not rude to Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio when he tried to cut him off during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on a new hate crimes bill yesterday .
Hate Crime Covid-19 Act aims to provide incentives to report hate crimes, increase funding for state-run hate crime hotlines, and increase sentences for people convicted under current hate crime laws.
Demings, the former Orlando Police Department chief, was criticizing what she called a “totally irrelevant” amendment that Republicans tried to sidestep to prevent offloading of police departments.
“I served as a law enforcement officer for 27 years,” said the congresswoman. “It’s hard work and good police officers deserve your support. You know, it’s interesting to see my colleagues across the aisle supporting the police when it is politically appropriate to do so.
It was then that Jordan interrupted her, prompting Demings to slam his hand on the table.
“I have the floor, Mr. Jordan,” she scolded. “What? Did I hit a nerve?
But she hadn’t finished yet.
“Law enforcement officers deserve better than being used as pawns, and you and your colleagues should be ashamed of yourself,” she added.

Last week Jordan had a similar howling match with Rep. Jim Clyburn from South Carolina and Rep. Maxine Waters from California during a coronavirus hearing with Dr Anthony Fauci.
Jordan ignored Clyburn’s objections by continuing to yell rude questions at Fauci when it wasn’t his turn to speak, prompting Waters to step in and tell him to “shut his mouth.”
Maybe Jordan should focus on his college wrestling / gay sexual abuse scandal rather than constantly disrespecting his black colleagues. Just a thought.
