Glenn Close’s “Da Butt” dance was the highlight of the Oscars. Has all this been staged?

In the midst of last night’s hectic, awkward and austere Oscar ceremony, one highlight stood out… so much so that it almost saved the series: Glenn Close dancing to the funk song “Da Butt”.

During the show, Lil Rel Howery decided to ask some of the nominees about the history of the Oscar winning songs. The task: to remember whether the song won an Oscar, was nominated, or was snubbed. After questioning Andra Day and Daniel Kaluuya, Howery walked over to Glenn Close. While a snippet of the song was playing, Close took to the room, recognizing the song from Spike Lee’s 1988 movie School Daze. She then wowed the crowd even more by hopping to her feet and performing the original dance of twerk type that accompanied the song.

Twitter erupted in kind. “Glenn Close just won his first Oscar for Best Live Action Short,” Joey Nolfi tweeted.

Glenn Close just dropped EU knowledge at #Oscars? What?!! DC represent it! Now bring state status.

“Glenn Close immediately dropped the knowledge of the EU to the #Oscars?” What?!! DC represent it! Now bring statehood, ”actor Jeffrey Wright tweeted.

“Glenn Close may never win an Oscar, but she just won the Oscars,” Terry Plucknett wrote.

Now the Los Angeles Times is reporting that it was all a little too good to be true. The newspaper apparently confirmed with sources close to the Oscars telecast that the track had been scripted, and Close was notified beforehand. Color disappointed us.

That said, the sight of Close, 74, one of the greatest actors alive, shaking his stuff around brought a much needed levity to the broadcast. We also hope she qualifies for an Emmy through her moves.

We also hope this moment brought some relief to Close. Her loss in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Hilbilly Elegy earned her two questionable accolades. First, she became one of the few actors to receive an Oscar nomination and a Razzie nomination for the same performance. Her loss also ties her to the late Peter O’Toole as the most nominated actor in history for not winning a competitive Oscar.

Hopefully we can see Glenn bring home his golden boy one of these days.
