BIOGRAPHY OF HILARY SWANK

Hilary Ann Swank, known only as Hilary Swank, was born on July 30, 1974 in Lincoln, Nebraska, although his family lived mostly in a trailer park, a caravan camp near Lake Samish in Bellingham, Washington. During her school years, Swank stood out for her two sporting skills, particularly in swimming and gymnastics. At the age of fifteen, following the separation of her parents, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother, to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. The first times, however, were very hard, as the two did not have enough money to rent a room and so they slept in the car; precisely this bond, consolidated during the Los Angeles period, strengthened the relationship between Hilary and her mother, who has always been defined by the actress as her source of inspiration for her career. Here in California, Swank briefly attends South Pasadena High School, which she will drop out of due to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and because she doesn’t feel comfortable in the environment. It was precisely this sense of strangeness, placated by the identification with filmic and literary characters, that pushed her more towards the actor’s path.

The first roles are for TV, appearances in some episodes of well-known series of the early nineties: Harry and the Hendersons (1991), Evening Shade (1991) and Parents in blue jeans (1992). They are small roles that serve to form her, but above all they serve Swank to help her mother pay the rent. In the same years she made her debut in the role of a friend of the huntress in Buffy – The Vampire Slayer (1992), film with Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry is Donald Sutherland from which the successful series will be drawn later. After this important part, with which she manages to put herself more in the light than in previous engagements, the young actress begins to get relevant roles also on the small screen, first in the sitcom Camp Wilder (1992) and then in the show Victim and murderer (1994). It is the starring part in Karate Kid 4 (1994), however, to bring her to success, in fact, thanks also to her previous motor skills, she fell perfectly into the character of Julie Pierce. On the strength of this fame, on TV I began to play the role of the main character: she is the problematic teenage daughter in the show Terror in the Family (1996) and a college student investigating the death of a friend of hers in Deadly trials (1997); same thing happens in the cinema with the thriller Checkmate to the organization (1996) and Lolita – The Sins of Hollywood (1997).

A new moment of stardom, once again international, Swank reaches him with the entry into the cast of the eighth season of Beverly Hills 90210 (1997) as Carly Reynolds, the single mother Steve will fall in love with (Ian Ziering). Carly’s character was originally supposed to be in for two seasons, but was cut after sixteen episodes resulting in the disappointment of Swank, who from now on takes a break from the CRT. On the one hand, the departure from the TV series in the 90s was a stroke of luck, as the actress was able to participate in the auditions for the role of Brandon Teena in Boys Don’t Cry (1999) of Kimberly Peirce, bio-pic about the story of a young transgender man brutally killed after being raped. The starring role and her performance earned Swank several nominations and Oscar and Golden Globe wins. Other less important roles follow, but always in main parts, such as that of Jeanne de La Motte in the historian The intrigue of the necklace (2001) of Charles Shyer and that of detective Ellie Burr next to Al Pacino is Robin Williams in the thriller Insomnia (2002) of Christopher Nolan.

After taking part in sci-fi The Core (2003) and the dramatic Red Dust (2004), a new great success arrives, that of Million Dollar Baby (2004) of Clint Eastwood, where her athletic physique allows her to be cast as boxer Maggie Fitzgerald with whom the actress wins a second Oscar and several other awards. In 2006 it is directed by Brian De Palma in Black Dahlia and later critics still hail her for the role of teacher Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers (2007) of Richard La Gravanese, who will also direct it in PS I Love You (2007), with which Swank won a People’s Choice Irish Film and Television Award for Best International Actress. Back on TV, after years of absence, with the show Angels of steel (2004) on the suffragette Alice Paul, and with the series Trust (2018) on the Getty case. At the cinema he takes part in a new bio-pic, Amelia (2009) of Mina Nair, about the female aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, with whom she won Best Actress at the Hollywood Film Festival. The second decade of the 2000s sees her busy on the sets of Conviction (2010), in the choral cast of New Year’s Eve in New York (2011) and in the dramatic Something good (2014). In 2017 she holds the role of FBI agent Sarah Grayson, in charge of investigating the robbery, ne The Logan scam of Steven Soderbergh.
