BIOGRAPHY OF ROBERT ALTMAN
Director, screenwriter and producer. Educated in a Jesuit institute, at 18 he enlisted in the Army and left for World War II as a pilot (he participated in over 50 aerial bombings). Back from the front, in 1947 he attended the engineering faculty at the University of Missouri (his is the invention of a machine to tattoo the identification code of dogs). At the same time he began writing for the radio and later made documentaries and industrial films for the Calvin Company. Having saved up some money, in 1953 he wrote, directed and produced his first film, “The Delinquents”. From 1957 to 1966 he worked for various TV series including “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and “Bonanza”, but was often fired from the sets due to his refusal to submit to the directives of the television network and his insistence on including political content in his works. and anti-militarists. Although on the verge of financial disaster due to gambling debts, he manages to found a production company, Lion’s Gate Films. In 1970 with “MASH” he won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the film received six Oscar nominations. He is famous for his ability to make ensemble films including “Nashville” (1975) – a film that garnered five other Oscar nominations and which, thanks to commercial success, earned him the money for the new 8-track sound system with which he can record live sounds on the set – “Buffalo Bill and the Indians: Sitting Bull’s History Lesson” (1976), “Three Women” (1977), “A Marriage” (1978), “A Couple perfect “(1979). After the failure of the film “Popeye” (1980), a musical inspired by the comics of the famous strong sailor and spinach eater, he decides to sell the Lion’s Gate and devote himself to the theater, forming Sandcastle 5 Productions and directing some plays. For about a decade he remained away from Hollywood while continuing to make films that were appreciated by audiences and critics alike: “Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” (1982), “Streamers” (1983) – whose performers all together won the award for best performance at Venice – “Madness of love” (1985), “Group therapy” (1987). The 90s marked the director’s return to the great film industry: “The protagonists” (1992), “America Oggi” (1993) – Golden Lion in Venice ex-aequo with “Trois Couleurs, Bleu” by K. Kieslowski , “Prêt-à-porter” (1994), “Kansas City” (1996), “Cookie’s Luck” (1999) and “Doctor T and the Women” (2000). In 1996 he won the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival and in 2002 he won the Golden Globe for best director for “Gosford Park”. In 2006, after five unsuccessful nominations (“MASH”, “Nashville”, “America Oggi”, “The protagonists”, “Gosford Park”), the Academy awarded him the Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, underlining how “his work has repeatedly renewed the seventh art, inspiring other film-makers and the public “. In the same year he successfully brought his latest work “Radio America” to Berlin. He died at the age of 81 in a Los Angeles hospital.
