BIOGRAPHY OF SUSO CECCHI D’AMICO

Screenwriter. Daughter of Emilio Cecchi, writer and literary critic, and of Leonetta Pieraccini, valid painter. His first encounter with cinema took place in the 1930s when his father was appointed director of film production for CINES and the Cecchi house became a real crossroads of cultural encounters for Roman artists. Her debut as a screenwriter dates back to 1946 with the film ‘My son professor’ by Renato Castellani, written together with her father and playwright Aldo De Benedetti. It is the beginning of an activity that will see her work together with the greatest exponents of Italian neorealism. In 1947, together with Piero Tellini, he wrote the screenplay for the film ‘L’Onorevole Angelina’ directed by Carlo Zampa (with whom he will work until 1952). The following year saw for her the beginning of a real “artistic union” with Ennio Flaiano starting from the film ‘Roma città libero’ by Marcello Pagliero, and with Cesare Zavattini from the unforgettable ‘Ladri di bicycles’ by De Sica on. Having in the meantime married Fedele d’Amico, son of the founder of the Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome to which Suso herself will make a notable contribution, she adds her husband’s surname to hers. The 1950s are characterized by intense activity, and Suso, endowed with the ability to analyze in depth the Italian post-war situation, becomes the usual screenwriter of directors such as Antonioni, for the films’ I vinti ‘(1952),’ La lady without camellias’ (1953), ‘Le amici’ (1955) and, Rosi for ‘The challenge’ (1958), ‘I Magliari’ (1959), ‘Salvatore Giuliano’ (1962). Her artistic success is now unstoppable, from ‘Bellissima’ (1951) to ‘L’Innocente’ (1976) she is Visconti’s regular screenwriter, and at the same time, she writes screenplays for Comencini and Monicelli. From these years we should also remember the numerous screenplays for television (usually adaptations from novels) including ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’ (1972) by Luigi Comencini and the three superproductions by Zeffirelli ‘La bisbetica domata’ (1966), ‘ Brother Sun, Sister Moon ‘(1972) and’ Jesus of Nazareth ‘(1977). The 80s and 90s saw the bond with the director of ‘I soliti ignoti’ strengthen even more, he wrote for him ‘Speriamo che sia female’ (1986), ‘I Picari’ (1987), ‘Il male oscuro’ (1992) and the miniseries for the rai ‘Come when it rains outside’. In 1988 he worked with Nikita Michalkov for whom he wrote the screenplay for ‘Oci Ciornie’ nominated for an Oscar as best foreign film, continuing to be active in the profession until over ninety. She is the mother of the producer Silvia d’Amico Bendicò, of Caterina, director of the Experimental Center of Cinematography and of Masolino, father of Margherita d’Amico, journalist and writer, wife of actor Luca Zingaretti. Suso Cecchi d’Amico has won numerous awards, including the Nastro d’Argento and the 2001 Nonino Prize.
